SELECTED WORK SABUKARU
SABUKARU CONTRIBUTOR
2023-2024
DESCRIPTION
For one year, JY contributed as a China-focused writer and cultural researcher for Sabukaru, the Tokyo-based creative platform known for its deep dives into global subcultures, aesthetics, and youth movements. Her work expanded Sabukaru’s coverage of contemporary China, bringing nuance, history, and cultural literacy to stories that often go unexamined in Western or pan-Asian media.
During her time with Sabukaru, JY researched and wrote across a wide spectrum of topics, building a body of work that mapped emerging Chinese aesthetics, niche internet phenomena, and regional cultural identities. Her features ranged from long-form cultural histories to trend analysis and subcultural storytelling, creating a bridge between Chinese digital life and a global creative readership.
JY also explored the surreal and uncanny universe of Chinese dreamcore, unpacking how nostalgia, liminal childhood spaces, ghost cities, and early internet aesthetics converge into a uniquely Chinese expression of weirdcore. Her approach combined historical grounding with aesthetic sensitivity, illuminating how these cultural fragments form new visual languages for a younger, hyper-online generation.
